ContentsWhat was SoulFest Canada ?Soulfest Canada was an outdoor concert held at Logos Land Resort from June 27, 28 and 29, 2003. SoulFest Canada was the dream of Shawn Alexander. Shawn was born in Manitoba, and grew up in St. Catharines, Ontario. In 1997, Shawn joined with Dan Russell of New Sound Concerts (PO Box 197 Merrimac MA 01860 (508)346-4577 (508)346-7608 Dan) in Massachusetts, US to co-produce a Christian Music Festival called the Inside Out Soul Festival. This event is held each year the first weekend in August at Loon Mountain in Lincoln, New Hampshire, US. This year the name was shortened to SoulFest, and the event is being held from July31st to August 3rd. For several years, Shawn has had a desire to have a similar Festival in Ontario. In 2003 this long-term dream came to fruition. Combining Dan Russell's twenty-seven years in the music industry as a producer, manager, concert promoter and festival promoter, with Shawn's executive producing expertise, this year's first annual SoulFest Canada will be a uniquely Canadian event, designed to help be a catalyst and facilitator of what God is doing in Canada. Our dream was to identify and align ourselves with key Canadian church leaders to provide a Celebration for all of God's family in Canada. We are partnering with World Vision Canada to bring you this year's SoulFest Canada. This festival is about Soul Revolution - revolution of how deeply we connect with God-our creator and each other. Revolution in how genuinely and effectively we love our "neighbor". Revolution in our effectiveness in being salt and light in our communities. Our goal is to awaken those who attend to the reality of God's individual call on their life... to encourage them to grow further up, further in on their adventure, to not take the middle ground, to be fearless, to surf, walk on water, love the unlovely, be risk takers, etc... This is part of our heart for "SoulFest" and "Soul University". SoulFest Canada WasFestival of celebration of God's family in and around Canada through music, conversation and participation Revival, transformation, healing and renewal A time for the entire family-urban, suburban, rural, Catholics, Protestants, all others Embracing the scriptural mandate of being salt and light and loving our neighbour An exploration of community, spirituality and mission A Soul Revolution From the Inside Out!
SoulFest Canada SponsorsSponsors included World Vision Canada, WBMW Records, Tyndale College and Salem Storehouse Bookstore. SoulFest offered 'The SoulFest Canada Soul University with several ground breaking interactive participatory conferences they called "conversations" led by renowned authors and speakers. tracks included Emerging Church, AIDS and The Church, Living the Gospel and a Youth Conference. Inside Out Stage Hall Seminars SoulFest Canada Saturday Activities11:00 am Ralph Martin: Growing in Prayer Drawing on scripture and the deep insights of certain teachers of prayer in his own tradition - Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, Catherine of Siena and others - Ralph will share insights that will help us to keep going, or get going, in our life of prayer. 12:00 pm Ralph Martin: What Holds Us Back? Many of us reach plateaus in our relationship with the Lord and wonder how to keep making progress in our journey to deeper union. Again, drawing on scripture and the teachings of great teachers of union with God in his own tradition, Ralph will share insight into what holds us back in making progress in the journey and how to overcome these obstacles. 1:00 pm Clayton Rowe: Poverty and the Local Church-How One Church Can Make A Difference One in every five Canadian children (1.1 million) lives in poverty. If government resources cannot adequately address this problem, what can the local church do? Join with us for a discussion of the effects of poverty upon children, their families and the community. Discover practical responses to those who suffer under the burden of poverty. Develop skills to partner with Christian organizations to create a greater presence in the community. Most people understand that poverty is more than simply a lack of finances. Those who are gripped by poverty experience it in every aspect of their lives. We will seek to gain a deeper understanding of God’s peace (shalom) for each individual who lives under this burden. Together we will explore practical examples that faith communities can use to bring healing to those who suffer in Canada. After all, one child living in poverty is too many. 2:00 pm Ralph Martin: Renewal in the Catholic Church: What is the Holy Spirit Doing? What are its implications for the whole body of Christ? In this seminar Ralph Martin describes how the Holy Spirit has been working over the past 40 years to little by little bring about a profound, Christ-centered renewal in the Catholic Church. He describes precisely what these changes are and what their implications are for the whole body of Christ. SoulFest Canada Sunday Activities11:00 am to 3:00 pm: AIDS and The Church Conversation: This mini-conference will explore the unprecedented ministry opportunity the AIDS epidemic offers the Church, both here in Canada, as well as internationally. We will explore how to effectively reach out to those whose lives have been devastated by this horrible disease. 11:00 am Conversation 1: Wildfire Adele Halliday of World Vision’s Youth Action Network (YAN) takes participants through a simulation of living with HIV/AIDS. Observers are not allowed—participants only. Purpose: To help festival-goers experience intimately the feelings and reactions of a person living with HIV as well as those of others who are not infected. You will leave with an awareness of how quickly and covertly the virus spreads and the deep emotional rifts (and bonds) it can create between people. 12:00 pm Conversation 2: Four Perspectives on HIV/AIDS and the Church Four individuals share strong opinions on how they believe the church is and is not engaged in fighting the spread of HIV/AIDS and ministering to those who suffer its consequences. Don’t miss how their lives have been changed. Panelists: Jim Cantelon: VisionLedd; Faith Ngoma: World Vision Zambia; Peter Heroux; Hendre Coetzee: CDTS; Moderator: Dwight Ozard 1:00 pm Conversation 3: Questions for Conversation 2 panelists This will be your opportunity to further the discussion started by the panelists in Conversation 2, by asking questions and providing your input into the discussion. 2:00 pm Conversation 4: Debating the ABCs of HIV/AIDS. “A” is for Abstinence. “B” is for Be Faithful. “C” is for Condoms. But is that good enough to overcome a global pandemic? This discussion promises to be very provocative. Panelists: Jim Cantelon, Vision Ledd, Faith Ngoma, World Vision Zambia, Peter Heroux, Hendre Coetzee Moderator: Dwight Ozard
Saturday 10:00 am to 5:00 pm: Leonard Sweet, Jordon Cooper, Dave Overholt, Hendre Coetzee: The Emerging Church Conversation The culture in this millennium is shaping up to be like nothing we’ve seen before. Millisecond images mesmerizing us as we sit transfixed in front of the TV; children killing children; society out-of-control; style over substance; intense Internet communication, even as people become lonelier than ever. New millennium postmodern culture is constantly changing at unprecedented rapidity. It is also an unprecedented opportunity for Christians to reach out with the love of Jesus Christ and make a different world. This event is an opportunity for learners with a passion for loving others in the context of the emerging postmodern culture to explore innovative, powerful new possibilities for ministry. Rather than react to what the culture presents, this is an opportunity to anticipate the changes occurring in the culture and make informed preparations so we can once again become a powerfully relevant force in our communities. Dr. Leonard Sweet is co-hosting this event. The format will be an interview format, with Lenonard initiating a discussion with some key individuals on the forefront of what is happening in the emerging church and who have special insight into how to effectively engage the emerging post-modern culture. Our special guests for this day-long event are Jordon Cooper, Dave Overholt, and Hendre Coetzee. Dave has planted a youth (15-25years old) targeted church six years ago that is fully independent of support. He will be discussing with Leonard and participants some of the lessons learned in his trek of reinventing what church means to this generation. Jordon will be discussing his insights of what it means to do ministry in a postmodern matrix. And, of course, Leonard will offer his unique insights into topics being discussed as the conversation unfolds. Hendre will be discussing the critical importance of leadership development in reaching the emerging post modern culture. The Emerging Church Conversation is not a series of seminars. It genuinely is a conversation-an interactive participatory event revolving around the conversations initiated by Lenonard, Jordon Cooper, and Dave Overholt. All participants will be invited to be a part of the conversation. This “conversation” will run from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, & then continue at 1:00 p.m after a lunch break and go until 5:00 p.m. Sunday 12:00 pm Pedro Guevara-Mann: World Youth Day – Behind the Scenes Last year, 800,000 youth gathered in Toronto to celebrate Jesus’ love for youth. They camped out in parks, churches, and high schools. They turned the streets of Toronto into a vast chorus of praise to Jesus. Pedro will be sharing his World Youth Day experience and the behind the scenes organization of the largest Christian event in the history of Canada. Pedro was Music director of the World Youth Days 2002 in Toronto. 1:00 pm David MacDonald: From Broadway & Hollywood to Sackcloth David will outline his journey to the top of the entertainment field and his fall into the darkness of sin. He will talk about what’s happening spiritually in Hollywood and Broadway and why it has turned from Christ. He will show how we as Christians can help change that. An Ottawa native, David was on Broadway, the US National Tour of Cats, co-stared in movies for Columbia and Paramount Pictures, produced rap music in Harlem and for CBS records which won a Feature Pick in Billboard Magazine. He hung out and worked with Robert Downey Jr., and many other celebrities. But his career was cut short when he fell into addiction and blew out his voice. He could not talk at all for 3 years. After a powerful encounter with Christ, his voice came back and he has been singing and talking about Jesus. 2:00 pm Andre Regnier: God’s Vision for Canada - Making It Our Vision Canada was founded upon Christian values. But in recent decades “relativism” has crept into our culture and has drawn us away from the grace that was bestowed upon us when this country was formed. Andre will examine the shift in our Country’s values and will show how we can make God’s vision for our country a reality. Andre will be talking about Canada’s spiritual heritage and how we have forgotten where we have come from. As we look back we will be able to move forward in taking back this country for Christ.
4:00 pm Clayton Rowe: Poverty and the Local Church-How One Church Can Make A Difference One in every five Canadian children (1.1 million) lives in poverty. If government resources cannot adequately address this problem, what can the local church do? Join with us for a discussion of the effects of poverty upon children, their families and the community. We will seek to gain a deeper understanding of God’s peace (shalom) for each individual who lives under this burden. Together we will explore practical examples that faith communities can use to bring healing to those who suffer in Canada. After all, one child living in poverty is too many. Seminar Hall 2 Saturday 11:00 am Scott Ivay: Flunky to Funky-The Journey of Inner Transformation Join Teen Mania for an exciting session with great worship, and personal testimonies of life transformations through living a life of Honor, and serving God in Missions, plus a word from Scott Ivay. 12:00 pm David Overholt: Mentoring, Growing Your Leaders There is no deeper form of learning than when a teen is mentored. We will be discussing how to mentor this next generation of new leaders. Understanding what mentoring is with many practical examples will be the centerpiece of this seminar. 1:00 pm Tom Jackson: Four Things Record Companies Look for in an Artist/How to Avoid Time Consuming Mistakes This seminar is for those who want to learn how to have a full time career/ministry. Find out what record companies look for in an artist, how they work with artists, if this is for you, or if you would be better off as an independent artist. Learn how the creative, business and spiritual sides of the music industry work together to make long lasting careers. 2:00 pm Tom Jackson: Making Money as an Artist or Band There are four things that drive most Christian artists. They are: Music, Ministry, Money, and ‘Me’. Music: a unique love and talent for music. Ministry: A desire to change lives through their music. Money: Make enough money to play music and minister full time. Me: The desire to fulfill the call on their lives. The problem usually isn’t the music, the ministry or the ‘me’; it’s usually the money. Come learn the five streams of revenue so that you can make music and change lives: yours and the people you play for. 3:00 pm Father Joe Leclair: Changing your Paradigm - Reclaiming the Dignity of Your Personhood When we turn away from the Lord we give away our self-esteem, integrity, and personhood. Father Joe will show how we reclaim our dignity in Christ. He will provide practical tools with which to step into this new Paradigm. 4:00 pm National Evangelization Team (NET): Encountering Jesus In A Personal Way In this seminar, this group of young Christians will help us remove obstacles to encountering Jesus in a personal way. For those of us who are already in a personal relationship with Jesus, they will help us live out that call. For those who do not yet know the Lord, this is a fantastic way to be introduced to this awesome way of life. They will perform skits, songs and give testimony. Sunday 12:00 pm Ian Forrest-Jones: If it worked for the Desert Fathers...!” In this new age, young and old alike live in a media-saturated environment. We have been transformed into spectators, rather than participants to such an extent that we long for meaning and connection to a larger reality than our individual lives. The Christian Church, for two thousand years, has provided symbol-rich rituals and practical spiritual disciplines designed to help Christians grow closer to God in their personal and collective worship, as well as to inspire and equip them for faithful lifestyles and service to God’s creation. In this seminar we will explore a sampling of twelve spiritual disciplines identified by Richard Foster, a Quaker and renowned author of the seminal text “Celebration of Discipline”. These disciplines are considered “classic” in the sense that they have been practiced for thousands of years, yet are completely relevant to our contemporary milieu, perhaps with only slight alterations or adaptations. 1:00 pm Ian Forrest-Jones: Know Your Neighbour Before You Love Them The apostle Peter encourages us to “Always be ready to make your defense to anyone who demands from you an accounting for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and reverence.” (1 Pet 3:15-16, NRSV) Preachers and apologists alike encourage the “make your defence” part of these verses, yet seem to rarely remind us of the “with gentleness and reverence” aspect of sharing our faith. Evangelism is more than simply beating someone into theological submission with our persuasive arguments. It is about pointing someone to the throne of God’s grace, introducing them to the Saviour of all. To share our faith with gentleness requires us to be sensitive to the needs, issues, and backgrounds of our friends and associates. To share our faith with respect means to recognise that the Spirit of God is already working in their lives long before we get to them. In this seminar we will take some time to understand the beliefs about God that are held by various religions of the world. By so doing, we will be able to more sensitively respond to their questions about our faith because recognising their religious background will help us to give appropriate answers to their questions, given the knowledge of God that they already have (see Rom 1:18-20), thus allowing us to share our faith with “gentleness and reverence” and bring them into a full and saving knowledge of our Lord and Saviour. 2:00 pm Scott Ivay: Triple X: Three Crosses, One Decision Sunday Join Teen Mania for an exciting session with great worship, and personal testimonies of life transformations through living a life of Honor, and serving God in Missions, plus a word from Scott Ivay. 3:00 pm Jordon Cooper: Decentralization & New Power Structures Within The Church. This seminar will explore the changing of the church from a traditional command and control structure to new structures designed to empower and give freedom and permission to staff and laity in the twenty first century. So many times we in the church specialize in saying no instead of yes. This seminar will explore new structures and organizational ideas for the church of the twenty-first century that will empower us to consistently say yes. 4:00 pm Ian Forrest Jones, Dale Winder: Networking For Youth Ministries (This is a special break-out session, a joint venture of Exousia Ottawa and the Canadian Youth Network, is only for those who minister with and among youth. Participants can be either church- or para-church based, paid or volunteer) "If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it." (1 Cor.12:26 NRSV) Have you sometimes felt that you were the only one that cared for the youth to whom you reach out with the Gospel? That you were alone in doing your bit for the Kingdom, in your neighbourhood? This special break-out session is specifically designed to inspire you with a larger vision of God's work in the world and in your community. We intend to share with you the purpose and power of networking with your peers in youth ministry, both at the national and local levels. This session will link you in prayer and support with other youth workers in your region. We will begin to dream together a greater movement of the Holy Spirit, as we share our experiences, encouraging and challenging each other to realise the exousia to which God has called all servants in youth ministry. He has had a personal relationship with Jesus since he was young and is in constant awe of the miracles that God has performed in his life. He will be sharing his World Youth Day experience and the behind the scenes organization of the largest Christian event in the history of Canada. He will also sing some of the songs that gave the staff strength as they prepared for that momentous response to the Holy Spirit’s call to the youth. He has a degree in Theatre from York University in Toronto, and has appeared in dozens of stage productions as well as several Television and Radio series and commercials. Peter Heroux In 1985 Peter became a Christian. In 1988 he tested positive for the HIV virus. From 1988 – 94 he was on staff with New Directions for Life Ministries as Counselor and Coordinator of Men’s ministries and HIV/AIDS programs. He has facilitated several support groups throughout southern Ontario and led seminars on HIV/AIDS issues to empower pastoral staff and lay membership to provide effective ministry within their own communities. In 1994 – 95, Peter worked with Sanctuary Ministries in Inner City outreach. He provided pastoral counseling for HIV infected and affected individuals. From 1995 – 98 Peter served at the Philip Aziz Centre, a Home Hospice for palliative care, on their Board of Directors and as Volunteer Coordinator. From 1995 to 1997, he was placed on disability due to illness. Since 1998, Peter has recovered from full blown AIDS and is once again working. Peter says, “My experience as an HIV (+) positive individual over the years has led me to believe that what makes effective ministry to those living with HIV, or any other life transforming crisis, is community. A community based on inclusivity, acceptance and vulnerability, offers real hope for anyone going through hard times. Nowadays families are scattered throughout the world leaving a deep need for people to connect within some kind of family atmosphere. The need for community is much deeper when one is faced with HIV, since many are already feeling alienated from their own families and friends. Someone living with HIV or AIDS is in need of our embrace, not our judgment. We cannot wait for them to come to us, they won’t. We must go to them. Jesus wants us to create loving communities so that those living in them can be empowered to go out and embrace those in need, and what better way to show God’s real love then by embracing those with HIV or AIDS.” Bradford How Bradford How is a twenty-five year old Winnipeg native. It was only five years ago that How made his move from communications student at Red River College to a full-time VJ for MuchMusic. Here are the words of one student “I found something here tonight that I thought was lost forever. The dramas, the prayer, the (discussion) groups—they all gave me back something priceless. Leonard Sweet “One of the church’s most important and provocative thinkers.” “No church leader understands better how to navigate the seas of the 21st century.” “A writer of vast imagination, poise and charm.” These are but a sampling of responses to Len’s three-ring mission: as a historian of American culture; as a futurist/semiotician who “sees things the rest of us do not see, and dreams possibilities that are beyond most of our imagining;” and as a preacher and writer who communicates the gospel powerfully to a postmodern age by bridging the worlds of academe and popular culture. Leonard’s book, SoulTsunami was the first in a trilogy of third millennium resources to help leaders come to terms with postmodern culture. The second installment, AquaChurch, was published in July of 1999. Where SoulTsunami covers the waterfront and scans the upcoming horizon, AquaChurch is designed specifically to show how to “do church” in this new world. How to “do life” is the focus of the third volume, SoulSalsa: 17 Surprising Steps to Godly Living, which hit the bookstores in May 2000 at the same time an original theme song for the book “SoulSalsa” hit the charts (you had to be age six to like it). Each book in Len’s pmX trilogy has its own website and multi-medial components, some of which have already received national awards. One was even nominated for a Grammy.
