StoryMakers    We will discuss how stories take shape, the importance of mentors and creative growth. Participants are encouraged to bring a short sample of their writing to share with the group. An overview of famous writers, & their approach to story.    Writing Narrative & Dialogue    We will look at elements of narrative: sequencing, coherence, style, and the role of dialogue.    Editing    drafting, polishing, editing with friends    Character Development  –  Timelines, setting, personal experience    Oral History    What are they and why they are important for families and communities. Practical tools for producing an oral history.    Sentence Modeling    How to learn from the best. This workshop will be hands-on. Be prepped to write and edit!

Cinematography    A 1 day workshop. Bring your own video camera, and we will cover the basics of composition, lighting, angles, lenses, tripods, camerawork.

Video Editing    1 day Hands-on workshop using a computer-based video editing system (Final Cut Pro) We will go through the process of capturing video to the computer, organizing clips, soundtrack & editing tools. Finally, using DVD studio Pro we will demonstrate DVD authoring.

Radio Drama    1 day. Writing for the ear. Directing vocal talent. Sound effects, music score, and mixing. We will write, record and assemble a short dramatic sequence with participants.

Visual Storytelling    An essential historical and cultural background for serious students interested in communication through video and internet. We will examine the early roots of photographic storytelling through viewing examples from newsreels, early films, and magazines. Analysis of the influence of photo essayists such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Eugene Smith, The Capas, Salgado, the development of photo agencies, with relation to modern media today. The latter part of the workshop looks at new approaches in contemporary storytelling.
