The Penny Merchants
When Michael Janzen and Kevin Loten first started working together in 1995 they never anticipated where those humble beginnings in a suburban church basement would take them. Now, almost nine years later and with the help of colleagues Corey Lacey, Seppo Salminen, and Shawna Baer, The Penny Merchants have established themselves as one of the most gifted and original Christian acts on the Canadian scene today.
Their mission is simple: to strive for musical excellence while providing listeners with songs that speak to the heart, mind, and soul. With their wide range of experience and collective versatility, The Penny Merchants create music which is both exciting and accessible. Whether your musical taste finds you sitting in a church, a nightclub, or an arena, there is something here for you.
The Penny Merchants first release, It Changes Me (2000) introduced a fresh new voice to worship music in Canada. The title track, written by Michael Janzen, is a powerful and moving reflection on faith which quickly found a place in the hearts of scores of listeners across the country. The high demand for this project now sees It Changes Me well into its fourth pressing.
Following up on the success of their debut, The Penny Merchants released their second CD, Mobility in the summer of 2001. As the name might suggest, listeners are encouraged to fasten their seatbelts as this project takes you on a dynamic and non-stop musical ride. Multi-layered arrangements, complex changes, and engaging imagery weave together a rich tapestry of sound. Sometimes serious, sometimes poignant, sometimes downright silly!, Mobility examines everyday life from relationships to answering machines through the lenses of faith, reminding listeners that what we believe determines who we are.
With their own growing passion for worship, The Penny Merchants returned to the studio in January of 2003 to work on their second worship project. The result is a powerful work called Surrounded. This CD offers listeners a collection of songs that reveal the overwhelming love of God and His desire to move more powerfully in the lives of His people.
