Rik began painting in high school with Robert Bateman as his teacher. There he gained inspiration and awareness for painting nature. He went on to study Fine Arts at McMaster University and has had several exhibitions of his work in Southern Ontario and the Maritimes. Over the last few years Rik’s artistic passion has been kindled with a new prophetic edge as he sees God both in nature and moving today in the lives of people.

Rik studied at Acadia Divinity College obtaining an M.Div. degree and from there began pastoring in rural Nova Scotia in 1981. He and his wife Cathy also ministered as missionaries in Costa Rica and Bolivia in the urban context. Rik and Cathy pastored several years in Ontario helping to plant churches in Mississauga, Stoney Creek, and Georgetown. While pastoring in Mississauga, a major shift began in Rik’s ministry, as he felt the Lord urging him to use his art. He was deeply touched by renewal as God’s Spirit was moving in Toronto.

His art has come into the foreground as a vehicle for expressing some of the prophetic images that he and others have sensed regarding the coming of a great revival. Speaking about spiritual awakening Rik says, "There is something afoot in the spiritual realm today. God is moving beneath the surface of society restoring people to wholeness. Towards that end God is reclaiming the arts for His use." Rik uses a blend of acrylic and airbrush in many of his larger paintings. In both his acrylic and watercolors he shows an interest in atmosphere and light that interacts with his figures and landscape. He explores in each painting new icons and symbols representing our journey with God and God’s way among us. "There is a new spiritual awareness and hunger across the land. My images explore the intersection of God coming to us."

In January of 1996 Rik began working with artists of various media with a vision to build one another up and see the arts reclaimed for God's use. Rik has helped the Worship Pure team in Germany as they integrate the arts into their evangelistic school of worship.

Rik and Cathy currently live in Nova Scotia with their 6 children. They are planting Valley Gate Vineyard Christian Fellowship and have opened "Brush of the Wind Gallery". They are awaiting a promise that God will bring spiritual awakening and revival in the same valley where it happened 200 years ago.

Rik has spoken throughout England as well as Australia, Spain, Germany, Canada and the US. He does conference speaking and workshops with his art, augmented by a unique blend of story and music. His paintings are part of private collections in Europe, Central and South America, Canada and the US. Rik’s prints are found world-wide.
