Founded in 1974, the Canadian Gospel Music Association’s mission is to promote the growth and ministry of the Christian music arts in Canada. This mission is accomplished by working to raise the profile and interaction between Christian artists, songwriters, producers and others working in Christian music with media, retailers, distributors and church leadership. The CGMA is also committed to nurturing and developing its members through educational programs as well as celebrating outstanding achievements and standards of excellence in all areas and genres of Canadian Gospel music. In 2003, the Canadian Gospel Music Association (CGMA) and the Gospel Music Association’s (GMA Canada) Canadian branch merged under the banner of the CGMA. GMA President John Styll is very much behind this new unified organization and the GMA is committed to supporting the CGMA in any way that enables them to accomplish their mission to promote the growth of Christian music arts in Canada. The annual CGMA Covenant Awards are the Canadian equivalent to the GMA’s Dove Awards and are the Canada’s longest standing Christian music awards.

Canadian Gospel Music Association Announces Name Change 2006
TORONTO, ONTARIO: The Canadian Gospel Music Association (CGMA) is excited to announce that they have formalized their partnership with the Gospel Music Association based out of Nashville, Tennessee and have officially changed their name to Gospel Music Association Canada (GMA Canada).

“This is the final step in the partnership that was introduced in September 2003. Being associated with the GMA will provide our membership with access to more resources and international creditability,” stated CGMA President Gary Dix. At that time, the CGMA and the Gospel Music Association’s (GMA Canada) branch merged under the banner of the CGMA. Since 1964, the Gospel Music Association headquartered in the Unted States has committed itself to it’s over 4,000 members. It is dedicated to exposing, promoting and celebrating the Gospel through music.

The GMA’s annual Gospel Music Week in April saw the first international chapter meeting. The GMA was represented by President John Styll, Eric Nordhoff of Go Global Distribution and Gabe Aviles. In addition to GMA Canada, participants included GMA Asia, GMA Australia/New Zealand and GMA Japan. GMA Canada’s Vice-President, Martin Smith was the first to present.
