Who is Demore Barnes ?Demore Barnes is a Christian and actor. He has starred in CTV Television's The Associates as well as a member of "First Responders" in the Twentieth Century Fox Television series THE UNIT, an action drama series that follows a covert team of special forces operatives as they risk their lives on undercover missions around the globe, while their wives maintain the homefront, protecting their husbands' secrets. Demore Barnes' acting career began when he landed a role in the Canadian sketch comedy show "Squawk Box." His television credits include the Canadian series "The Associates," for which he won the Black Film Award for Best Performance in a dramatic series and two Gemini Award nominations for Best Lead Actor in a dramatic series. His other television credits include the Canadian children's show "Street Cents" and movies "White Lies," "Second String" and "Blackout." Barnes appeared in the feature film "Steal This Movie." Demore Barnes was a shy student at Sir Oliver Mowat High School in Toronto when some friends cajoled him into hosting the school's Christmas assembly. The performance was a hit, giving Barnes the confidence to try out for Squawk Box, a sketch comedy show on YTV. (Canada's version of Nickelodeon) He was eighteen years old, and it was his first professional audition. He got the job. And the beginning of a career in acting was launched. The show lasted one season, by which time Barnes knew he wanted to pursue acting as a career. He applied to Ryerson University's theatre program, but a successful audition for the CBC kids show," Street Cents", sidetracked his academic aspirations. Demore was nominated for two consecutive years for the Gemini award (Canada's equivalent of Emmy) as Best Lead Actor in a drama series. In addition, Demore was the winner of the BFV and Black Film Award for best performance in a dramatic series.
Demore Barnes' Christian FaithBarnes maintains that he’s never compromised his Christian faith to further his acting career. He says he’s “never done anything as an actor” that he is “ashamed of before God.” “I try to live by faith so people ask questions and come to their own conclusions,” he says. “Some have been really surprised to discover I’m a Christian because I’m not a walking stereotype.” Barnes grew up in Scarborough, Ontario, and not in a home that he describes as financially privileged or particularly religious. At 16, he started attending Sunday morning worship services at a church in his neighbourhood. He was on a mission. It was at age 18 that Barnes’ career as an actor took off. Roles he’s played include the lead in the series Street Cents and appearances in shows such as Relic Hunter, Doc and Hoop Life. He’s also been in television movies like White Lies, Second String and If You Believe. He’s done one film: Steal This Movie! Barnes does not worry about the roles he may one day play. Before auditioning for a role Barnes reads the script of the part carefully to ensure it’s for a character he wants to play. He has also discussed the content of roles he’s had with his directors and producers to bring his own perspectives to it. The outcome of Christians’ reluctance to join the mainstream entertainment sector, he says, is evident in how they react to what it produces. “Christians sometimes rail against on-screen portrayals of violence, self-destructiveness and degradation,” he says. “But Christians have ignored God’s call by walking away from mainstream entertainment to be craftspeople of an alternative subculture. Christians need to enter the mainstream, too, and to live by their faith here.” “My personal role model is Jesus. If I aspire to act like anyone when I’m off-camera, it’s Him. He had an unwavering love not just for the people who accepted Him or for the people who believed what He stood for, but also for the people who hated Him.” He says his long-term dream is for secular moviegoers and TV viewers to see something of the character of Jesus in him.
