An odyssey in the heart of psalms.
Psalm 2
In this Psalm, God asks two questions that still apply to our generation.
1Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?
2The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together,
against the LORD and against his anointed, saying, (ESV)
We've come to a time in history where mankind in general wants to turn away from the Living God. With their leaders, their ministers, their ambassadors, their presidents, they try, through legislative measures, to keep the reality of God from penetrating their daily lives. While in one part of the planet, the leaders try to imprison their citizens in diabolical fundamentalist states, others plan to rid the people's hearts of God. Two frontal attacks led by the Prince of the Air, the Prince of Darkness.
3"Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us." (ESV)
This reflects the attitude of people seduced by the Father of Lies. Satan has managed to make them believe that his domination is better than God's and His anointed one; the Son Jesus-Christ. He displays before them the liberty to sin as a lifestyle, a free choice, while he is hiding the chains that will surely drag them to the eternal punishment.
4He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision. 5Then he will speak to them in his wrath, and terrify them in his fury, saying, (ESV)
While from on high, the Lord allows His fury to manifest itself in order to awaken the people's conscience, lulled to sleep by the seduction of evil. An earthquake, a "natural" disaster, hard times, all demonstrate the necessity of divine intervention in our daily lives. It's at those times that no tribunal or charia inspired by the enemy and imposed on men, can stand up against God's decree.
6 "As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.
7 I will tell of the decree: The LORD said to me, "You are my Son; today I have begotten you.
8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession.
9 You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel."
10 Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth.
11 Serve the LORD with fear and rejoice with trembling.
12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him. (ESV)
Someday we will see with our own eyes the kingdom of Christ manifested at the four corners of the globe. Today his royalty is hidden in the hearts of believers, tomorrow it will be visible in every nation. Those who want to resist Christ's sovereignty will be broken without mercy.
Why?
These nations have no more excuse to subject their brothers to accusation since they will find themselves uprooted for eternity from the land of the living.
So it's really the rebellious hearts that demonstrate the resistance to the coming of the reign of justice, led by the Son of the Living God.
For those who have accepted His reign in their lives, this Psalm ends with a wonderful promise: Blessed are all who take refuge in him! No matter life’s circumstances, when we trust in the Lord, we are assured that He will give us peace and joy, even in the middle of the tribulations we have to go through (Psalm 118:8-9)!
It will not be easy, the way will be hard, the slopes abrupt, the valleys of despair dark. But our earthly pilgrimage will end in triumph, glory and magnificence when Jesus, the King of kings, will appear, coming with the clouds, to take with Him his church, to the celestial city, prepared for her.
Prayer: "Thank you, Heavenly Father, for drawing us to you, for revealing to us your love and the beauty of Your sovereignty. May you give us the courage and determination to continue walking with you until the day you call us back to yourself"
