Link Byfield
In 1978, Link Byfield joined the staff of the weekly newsmagazine, Alberta Report, as a reporter. His coverage of agriculture and politics won him consecutive first prizes at the Western Magazine Awards in Vancouver.
He was appointed the magazine’s publisher in 1985 and in 1989 he became editor, succeeding his father, Ted Byfield, as chief of the magazine’s editorial and business operations. Starting in 1986, he oversaw the expansion of the Report across the West and into Ontario. At its height the magazine had 65,000 subscribers and over one-quarter million readers.
In 2003 he founded the Citizens Centre for Freedom and Democracy, a non-profit organization that promotes the restoration of provincial rights and responsible government through constitutional reform.
In the fall of 2004, he was chosen from a field of ten as one of Alberta’s four senators-elect for a six-year mandate.
