Evangelicals Alienated from Mainstream Media: Survey
By Bill Fledderus

A survey of 4,000 evangelicals conducted last year by the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada (EFC) suggests that three-quarters of EFC supporters feel alienated from mainstream radio and television and want access to Christian media.

Specifically, close to three-quarters of those surveyed said:

  • they were “often” offended by sexual imagery and sexual dialogue on TV (84%)
  • they were “often” offended by scenes of violence on TV (74%, plus an additional 23% “occasionally”)
  • they were “occasionally” or “often” offended by sexual dialogue on radio (37%, 38%)
  • the media “rarely” portray Christians with fairness (69%)
  • CBC TV and CBC Radio do not carry sufficient levels of religious programming (79% and 68% respectively) want the “threshold hour” for more adult programming, currently at 9 p.m., pushed back to 10 p.m. or later (85%).

Virtually all respondents agreed that “having access to Christian television or radio stations” is “important” or “very important” (42%, 56%). Only two percent said such access is not important.
