Grace Like Winter was a hard core band.

  • Derek-Bass
  • Jacqui-Vocals
  • Joel-Guitar
  • Murray-Drums
  • Tanner-Vocals

Grace Like Winter began in November 1998 as a cover band for a friend's birthday party. The original members were Jacqui on vocals, Joel on guitar, Matt on Bass, and Murray on drums. In March of 1999, Grace Like Winter Played their first show with original songs, and a full line-up rounded out with Tanner as a second vocalist and Tom as the bassist (matt switched to guitar).

After several shows in the spring and summer of 1999, Grace Like Winter released a Demo CDR in august, aptly titled 'Demo 1999.' Then in November, one year after their inception, Grace recorded four songs for a split release with another Winnipeg band: From This Day Forward. This split was released in May of 2000, and a whirlwind of shows, weekend trips, and a tour of eastern Canada ensued.

After a short hiatus in the winter of 2000/2001, Grace Like Winter reunited for the summer months for more shows, and tours in western and eastern Canada. Another short Demo CDR was recorded and released in August of 2001. At this time, Tom decided to leave the band, and was replaced with Derek.

Grace Like Winter has had the opportunity to play a number of different venues across Canada, and with a number of different bands, including: Poison The Well (Trustkill), Martyr AD, Grade (Victory), Figure Four (Facedown), the Appleseed Cast (Deep Elm), Moneen (Smallman), and many more.

Grace Like Winter remains a group of six individual people, with six very different tastes in music. As such, the songs they write comprise much more than a standard hardcore or metal influence. However, the members also agree that the sum is greater than its parts; that no individual could claim a stake in the writing process that could be divorced from the influence of the whole.

Grace Like Winter is a Christian band. That is, though they come from different backgrounds, they are united on the point that Christ is God incarnate, and that his death and resurrection redeem humanity from the ties that bind us all.

Thank You.

There are a lot of people who have contributed to the GLW experiment in the past, and we would like to acknowledge their membership:

Matt: Guitarist, 11/98-01/02 Tom: Bassist, 01/99-09/01 Travis W: Played drums for us when murray thought he was going to leave the band, quit shortly thereafter to concentrate on his other band, The Rippers. 02/01-04/01

There are many more people that deserve to be here, far to many for us to list without someone feeling slighted. So i won't list anyone but the past members, but thank you to all of you, you know who you are.

>joel October 15, 2002:

k, in the next couple days, i'm going to go about posting every song grace like winter has recorded, probably on mp3.com. i might even add some unreleased stuff from our first demo, just a month after we formed... it's really embarassing, and i don't quite know where it is, but if i find it, it'll be up there....

-joel September 27, 2002:

Looking back on my previous posts, it all seems very optimistic, but things have come full circle... Grace Like Winter has called it quits.

So it goes.

it came down to a separation of personalities, ideas, futures, nothing more... There won't be a final show in Winnipeg. we feel it is just time to bow out...

"this is the way the world ends, not with a bang, but a whimper." -W.B Yeats

there are alot of people that deserve a thank you, so, thank you, sincerely, from the bottom of our hearts...

-Joel September 17, 2002:

We just got back from our shows in Edmonton and Calgary, it was alot of fun. Our new members are working out well... I don't think i announced them, Derek has switched to guitar after a few shows on bass, and John (X-Figure Four) is playing bass. thank you to everyone who came out to the shows, it was amazing to see everyone, and to meet new people. Those who attended got to hear a new song, as yet un-titled, and one of a few we are working on right now. I think that's it for now...

joel August 24, 2002:

joel June 17, 2002:

if i haven't said anything in a while, it's cause there is nothing to say.

we are finally all in the same city again. maybe we'll play again soon. we need another member.

-joel May 7, 2002:

OK, things have come up, and we won't be playing any shows in june. we'll both have to wait longer... sorry.

(now the ears of my ears are awake and now the eyes of my eyes are opened) -joel April 22, 2002:

Jacqui is back in town! Tanner was back, but she is now on tour with Figure Four, if you see her say hi from her band. We are working on some new songs right now, and are getting ready for shows in June. Check here for show dates, times, etc. think you... joel March 30, 2002:

So, i don't know if i mentioned it, but we applied for the New Band Showcase at Cornerstone Festival. We didn't get in. That's the way it goes. We still have demos, shirts and buttons, email if you want something. I'm procrastinating right now, i have alot of homework to do... i'll get to it. bye.

-joel February 20, 2002:

We've just heard from jacqui in australia. we won't be able to play Hoodie Hardcore Fest in Calgary this year. I'll probably be going out with Standstill though, if you haven't heard them, they are an awesome band from winnipeg. So, no word on when we'll actually be playing again. Not much other news, Murray is working 16 hour days, I'm in school & trying to write songs, Tanner is going to Toronto for a while (say hi if you see her), I haven't talked to Derek for weeks. hello, good bye; I'm sorry, it's okay... -joel February 5, 2002:

The big news is that Matt has left the band, but to those of you who know us, that isn't a surprise. Don't worry, we are still on speaking terms, he just wants to focus on his other band Every New Day, and thats cool. Murray is still in though, which means we are going to be more metal than ever.

We got asked to play the Hoodie Hardcore Fest in Calgary this year. We still aren't totally sure that we are going, but i definitly hope so, its always a good time.

In other news, tanner got me to take down the Battle Cry MP3 from our first demo, she was embarassed. Come to think of it, its no small wonder that I left it up this long, I'm embarassed of that song/recording too. New song up soon, maybe even tonight if i get around to it. -joel January 19, 2002:

Ok, It's been another few months since an update. This is whats up: Jacqui is in australia working for a while, so we won't be playing shows for a while. In fact, we probably won't be playing until early summer. We are currently working on songs for a full length which we want to have out by summer time. When we know what label its on, and when it's going to be released, we'll post it here. There are still a bunch of the 'Red Ep' left; it has 2 new songs, and 2 re-recorded songs from 'Demo 1999'. We also have shirts and buttons, Email us if you want anything. Thats about it, thanks alot. -joel
