The Word Guild Canadian Christian Writing Awards honour work published by Canadian writers who are Christian. The award is produced by The Word Guild. In 2007 winners ranged from well-known, venerable theologians J. I. Packer and James M. Houston, to 14-year-old Richard Weening, the youngest-ever winner. The teenager from Newmarket, Ont., won for the first poem he penned, in which he used the metaphor of junior league hockey to create a contemporary interpretation of the famous 1 Corinthians 13 chapter about love. It was published in SCA International's magazine Word & Deed. Weening tied for best poem with Judith Millar of Nanaimo, B.C. (formerly of Kitchener, Ont.), while eighty-year-old poet George Whipple of Burnaby, B.C., won a book category for his ninth poetry collection, The Peaceable Kingdom (Penumbra Press).
