Wilma Derksen's story is one of faith transformed by trauma. She was living an average middle class life on a quiet street about 15 minutes from downtown Winnipeg with her husband and three children.

That changed on the 30th of November 1984, a seemingly routine Friday afternoon. Her oldest child, 13 year old Candace, phoned to ask for a ride home from high school. Wilma said no. It was the last time she would speak to her daughter.

Candace was abducted, hog tied at the wrists and ankles, and left to freeze to death in a storage shed 10 minutes from home. Her body wasn't found for six-and-a-half weeks. Her killer has never been found. There was no ransom note, no sexual assault - no apparent motive.

With soul-wrenching honesty, this book describes a mother’s agony and hope in the midst of the search for her abducted daughter. The book spans the events and learnings of one year, beginning with the day that Candace disappeared and ending with the anniversary of that day. The story reveals both the earnest goodwill of a supportive community, the life of an average family, the horror of the aftermath of murder and the way one family tried to cope. Not only is it a book of insight, it remains a tension-filled story.

Confronting the Horror: The Aftermath of Violence The victim’s journey through the 15 elements of serious crime

Trade Paper | 5.5" x 8.5" | 263 pages | ISBN 0-9731557-0-1 | 1/1/2002 |

A rare insight into the fragmented world of the crime victim. Written in an easy-to-read conversational style, this book organizes the crime victim detour into stages and elements that most victims will encounter. Each chapter begins with a family-type story to gently introduce the theme of the element. This is followed by a description of the element, the underlying reasons for it (including academic research), the consequences and then practical helps for dealing with the element. This book is accessible and applicable for anyone who has experienced a crime and for those who support them.
